Many people who visit your web site because you are the
best website designer around...or they will do so because of something they
have read on paper or via an e-mail, not because they are looking for it via
a Web search engine. That doesn't mean search engines are
worthless; but many of the people who visit your web site via search engines
aren't in your target audience they may be students
researching a paper, someone in a different geographic area trying to find out
about a subject that relates to your organization's work
or mission, and so forth.
You do not have to you the http:// in any advertised
snail mail marketing. A simple www.10000mb.com will work. You must put
in the www. because if you are using a windows asp...and not apache/linux server,
your site will not show up!There are lots of
ways to market your Web site both on and offline:
Offline Marketing
Add your Web address to all literature and publications (business cards, letter
head, newsletters, fax cover sheets, etc.) right next to
your organization's "snail mail" address and phone number. Make sure
your heading is website design, if that is what your specialty is.
Announce the launch of you site, as well as major changes
to your site (such as the addition of a directory of services,
website design...etc.), in your printed newsletter. In fact, you should have
something regularly in
your newsletter that highlights a resource on your Web site.
Make sure everyone who answers your organization's main
phone line, as well as your Executive Director, marketing staff
and fund raising staff (and at a NPO, this is often the
same person) knows how to say the Web address, and knows what
information is available via the Web site (so they can make appropriate referrals).
Add the Web address to your organization's voice mail
message. If you write an article for a publication, ask that your
organization's web address appears with your name at the beginning or end of
the article. When talking to the press,
remember to mention your web address. Ask them to refer readers to it.
Send press releases to local newspapers and professional
publications announcing your site, and remember to add your
Web address to all press releases. For instance, on a press release announcing
a new publication, add a paragraph that says
(if applicable) "This new publication can be accessed via our Web site
at..... " Note that, for some publications, any use of the
Net is still news; other publications will only report on innovative uses.
E-mail Web masters at Web sites that relate to your organization, and ask them
to link to your site. Don't ask for link exchanges;
instead, demonstrate why it would be appropriate to link to your site.
Look for a good SEO (Search Engine Optimizer), site that
will give you a ton of knowledge. If you are a website designer, you should
already
know a few good seo sites. You can also check on google's page rank. Just go
to google.com and type in page rank, and your website
designer or you, should be able to figure out the pigeon ranking system.
